Beam prices move up in Germany
Prices for beams and heavy sections in Germany are moving up by Euro 20-30/tonne this month. Salzgitter’s Peine works, the country’s main producer of heavy beams, says the price increases for August — announced last month — are going through.
"The increase is mainly a result of rising energy prices and expenses linked to energy costs," a Salzgitter spokesman tells Steel Business Briefing. The scrap surcharge, which in July was forecast at Euro 30-40/t for August, has effectively reached Euro 59/t .
The price increase does not suggest an upward trend in any particular segment of the beams market, and will be applicable across all product sizes equally, a buyer with one distributor specialising in profiles suggests. He sees prices swinging up from a long downturn now that inventories are emptying.
"Other producers are lifting their prices as well. We’ve also heard it from Poland and the Czech Republic, where we get most of our stocks from," he tells SBB.
