The world’s No. 3 aluminum producer, RusAl, plans to open a new plant next year in a move that would boost the firm’s production by up to 300,000 tons in 2007, a senior official said on Friday.

"The Khakassia [plant] ... will be commissioned toward the end next of year," RusAl’s deputy general director for sales and marketing, Peter Finnimore, said.

RusAl’s preliminary estimate of 2006 production is 2.81 million tons, he said. Output in 2004 was 2.67 million tons.

The new plant sits right next to RusAl’s Sayanogorsk smelter in the Siberian region of Khakassia, near the Mongolian border.

Under a 10 year-strategic development plan unveiled last year, RusAl plans to nearly double its metal output to 5 million tons in 2013. RusAl wants to achieve that goal through modernization of existing smelters and construction of greenfield facilities like the one in Khakassia as well as a planned smelter in the Irkutsk region.
